Methodology

Learn by Doing

The program is centered on practice. Each concept is reinforced through real coding tasks and practical applications, simulating real-world development environments.

Final Video Game Project

You’ll work on a final video game project with mentoring support throughout. The outcome: a polished game to include in your portfolio, demonstrating your capabilities as a Unity developer.

Collaboration with Incubated Teams

Upon completion, selected students may join one of our incubator teams and contribute to a live project in development, gaining insight into team dynamics, iterative workflows, and professional production standards.

Career Development Support

You’ll receive 40 hours of focused career development training: crafting a compelling portfolio, building a professional CV, optimizing your online presence, and preparing for interviews in both indie and AAA environments.

Course Overview

We’ll explore clean code practices tailored for game development, beginning with refactoring techniques in existing projects. Topics include naming conventions, project structure, meaningful comments, and effective documentation. You’ll learn strategies to reduce coupling and increase cohesion, and apply essential design patterns in Unity such as Singleton, Observer, Factory, Strategy, Command, Decorator, and MVC. We’ll conclude with an in-depth application of the SOLID principles to ensure a robust and maintainable architecture.

We’ll develop dynamic weapon systems with integrated AI, starting with decision-making algorithms for weapon selection. You’ll design adaptive enemy behaviours, simulate realistic weapon physics, and build interactive combat systems with combo mechanics and responsive feedback. These systems will be enhanced through synchronised animations and visual effects (VFX). The module concludes with advanced navigation and real-time pathfinding using optimised NavMesh strategies.

This module focuses on mastering Unity’s core systems, with particular emphasis on MonoBehaviour and advanced component usage. You’ll explore realistic physics simulations and optimisation techniques, alongside best practices for managing scalable prefabs. The module also covers advanced UI design using Canvas, as well as the creation of impactful particle effects to enhance the visual quality of your games.

We’ll explore gameplay dynamics using Scriptable Objects to create flexible data structures, configure the Input System for custom controls, and simulate realistic physics through Ragdoll setups. You’ll manage timeline-based animations, implement audio using the Audio Mixer, and apply rigging techniques for expressive character animations — enhancing both immersion and visual storytelling.

This module delves into advanced lighting and rendering techniques using HDRP to achieve photorealistic visuals. You’ll work with Decals and real-time lighting to create immersive environments, implement global illumination, and apply light baking for optimisation. You’ll also build custom shaders using Shader Graph, apply post-processing effects for cinematic quality, and stylise visuals to reflect your game’s artistic identity.

You’ll apply advanced performance optimisation strategies in Unity, fine-tune physics systems, and improve graphical efficiency to achieve higher frame rates. Using the Unity Profiler, you’ll identify bottlenecks and streamline systems. We’ll also cover remote profiling techniques to ensure stable performance across platforms and development environments.

Learn how to streamline workflows and manage Unity projects efficiently. You’ll implement scalable project structures, optimise scene and GameObject organisation, and use automated tests for continuous quality control. You’ll also integrate asynchronous scene loading and apply advanced exception handling to improve game stability, while maintaining clean, modular code through advanced use of lambdas and operators.

Customise Unity’s editor to fit your workflow. You’ll create custom inspectors and editor windows to build tailored tools, use PropertyDrawers to enhance usability, and implement custom attributes for flexible and maintainable code. These tools will enable you to adapt Unity’s environment to suit your development needs.

Explore cutting-edge technologies and modern production workflows. Topics include ECS (Entity Component System) for performance optimisation, multiplayer architecture using NetCode for GameObjects, and advanced animation systems with DOTween. You’ll also develop cross-disciplinary collaboration skills and prepare for real-world job applications within the games industry.

Put all your knowledge into practice by creating a complete, portfolio-quality game project. This final deliverable will demonstrate your capabilities and serve as a strong foundation for future opportunities within the games industry.
