Program

We will look at the video game market analysis. From the Game Overview to the Pitching of a competing game, we will study every crucial aspect. In addition, we will immerse ourselves in the commented Gameplay, learning to record and verbalize game emotions. We will understand the importance of subjective feedback to improve the user experience. This module will provide an in-depth understanding of the market and techniques for evaluating games from a critical and analytical perspective.

We will explore Game Design, addressing from its definition to the creation of the Game Design Document (GDD). We will learn about different formats such as the One Page GDD, High Concept Document and Pitch Deck. We’ll delve into the importance of each and how they’re used at different stages of game development. By the end, you’ll understand how Game Design influences all aspects of the video game creation process and how these documents are critical to effectively conveying the game’s vision.

We will address player motivation, exploring the different types of gamers and their impact on video game design. We will learn about the CMDA model (Components, Mechanics, Dynamics and Aesthetics) and its application in the creation of immersive experiences. We will also analyze the game loop, understanding its importance in the structure of games. In addition, we’ll explore tutorial design strategies, from modeling to explorative, as well as designing cameras, game controls, and playable characters in the Cameras, Controls, and Character (CCC) process.

We will explore state machines and artificial intelligences in video game design. We will analyze the concept of game balance, addressing the flow of resources, numerical relationships and numerical simulations to achieve a balance between cost and benefit to the player. In addition, we will learn how to create an expansion pack, understanding how to add additional content in a coherent and engaging way to keep the interest of the player community.

We will delve into level design for video games. We will explore the different types of levels, such as exploration, combat, and tutorial, understanding their characteristics and purposes in the player experience. We will learn the workflow of level design, from conceptualization to implementation. In addition, we’ll look at how to design levels based on different genres, such as Metroidvanias and Roguelites, puzzles, and stealth, exploring the specific mechanics and structures that set them apart and how to effectively integrate them into level design.

We will dive into the elaboration of the final project. We will explore the creation of the High Concept Document (HCD) and executive documentation, addressing how to effectively structure and present project ideas and objectives. In addition, we will focus on the commercial presentation of the project, where we will learn how to design the pitch deck, a crucial element to communicate our proposal clearly and convincingly to potential investors, partners or clients. These tools will help us to consolidate and present our final project in a professional and attractive way.
